Description:

Field hockey is the main branch and the first form of hockey, the second most popular sport in the world after football. Field hockey has prestigious competitions for women and men in international tournaments. These tournaments include the Olympics, the World Cup of Hockey, and the annual World Cup championship tournament.

History:

Although there is no definitive evidence to determine where and when it emerged, it is thought that hockey's history dates back to the earliest civilizations. A painting found in Tomb 17 in Beni Hasan, Egypt, dating back to approximately 2050 BC, depicts two players holding curved sticks and appearing to be playing hockey. It is known that Arabs, ancient Greeks, Persians and Romans also had their own hockey games. The first records of this sport among the Aztecs of South America and in England date back to 1277. Hockey was frequently played in English schools in the 19th century. A record from 1861 indicates that the first men's hockey club was established in Blackheath, southeast of London.
